Quick Sambar

Quick Sambar is an easy recipe to make when you don’t have enough time to cut any veggies for sambar. It is a spicy lentil soup with variety of vegetables and is eaten with Idli, Dosa or Rice. It originated from south india and is made by split red gram.

Quick Sambar

 Serves 3-4

 Ingredients

¾ cup toor dal/ split red gram

1 onion

2-3 tomatoes,small & chopped

1 teaspoon tamarind paste

few curry leaves

½ teaspoon mustard seeds

½ teaspoon methi dana/fenugreek seeds

1 teaspoon chilli powder

1 tablespoon sambar powder

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

salt to taste

Method

Pressure cook toor dal with 1 ½ cup water,add salt & turmeric.

Heat oil in a pan, add methi seeds & mustard seeds.

Once they splutter add onion and curry leaves,saute until translucent.

Add tomatoes and cook till tender.

Mix tamarind paste with some water and add it to the onion,tomato paste.

Cook till raw flavour is gone. Now add all the spices along with some salt.

Add boiled toor dal and check the consistency you want. If you want it to be little thin, you can just add some water.

Let it boil and simmer for 10-12 mins.

Garnish with coriander and serve hot with Idli’s, Rice or Dosa or simply just have it as a soup.
