Dal Makhani (Black gram Dal)

Dal Makhani is a popular dish from Punjab. This dish is full of butter and cream. Dal makhani is a protein rich lentil stew which is a comforting food. Makhani means dish prepared with loads of butter. It tastes awesome with naan, chapati and rice and I can still smell the fragrance of this dal in my kitchen.

Dal Makhani

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

1 cup urad dal (whole urad dal),soaked overnight and cooked along with kidney beans until soft

1/4 cup kidney beans

1 tablespoon ghee

4-5 garlic cloves,chopped

1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds/methi dana

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp ginger paste

1 onion, chopped

2 green chilli chopped

3 large tomatoes, chopped

1 tsp red chilli powder

1 tsp garam masala

3 tablespoon cream

1 tablespoon butter

pinch of hing/asafoetida

salt to taste

Method

Wash and soak dal and kidney beans overnight. Pressure cook both of them until soft.

Heat ghee in a pan. add hing, fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds.

Now add chopped garlic,saute till light brown.

Add green chilli & chopped onion,cook till light brown.

Add tomatoes,cook till they are reduced to pulp and gives a nice aroma. Add red chilli powder.

Now add cooked dal,bring it to boil. Add water if consistency is too thick.

Add garam masala, salt, cream and butter. I used less cream and butter,but you can add more according to your taste.

Some people mash the dal a little bit but i didn’t do it.

Simmer it for 15-20 mins until the dal is well blended and soft.

Serve hot with rice, naan or chapati.

  1. I love eating dal with naan, or rice or even pasta. It goes well with any starch. Thanks so much for sharing this. I shall see if we have some black gram in my local store. I have never tried them….have a great week!
