Shalgam ka bharta (Spicy Turnip Curry)


Turnip or shalgam is a winter vegetable and are under rated. It is usually prepared with onions and tomatoes. Turnips are easy to cook and are really good for your health. This is a simple dish and can be had with chapati, rice or paratha. You can also add peas to this dish to add more flavour and they also act as a good contrast.



Shalgam ka bharta


2 turnips/ shalgam, pressure cooked with some salt and mashed

1 onion, chopped

1 large tomato, chopped

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tbsp coriander powder

1/2 tsp red chilli powder

1/4 tsp turmeric

1-2 tsp mango powder/ amchur

2 tablespoon oil

salt to taste

pinch of sugar

1/2 cup peas

coriander for garnishing


Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, saute for a minute.

Now add chopped onions. Let them cook till they are light brown.

Add tomatoes, cook till they become soft. Add turmeric, coriander, red chilli and mango powder.

You can also add green chilli if you like. Add salt and sugar. Don’t skip adding sugar as it enhances the flavour and also removes the turnip’s odor.

Let the masala cook till it leaves the side of pan. Add mashed shalgam/ turnip.

Cook till water evaporates. Add peas, cook for 1-2 mins.

Garnish with coriander.

Serve hot with chapati, paratha or rice.
