Tomato Rasam (Instant and Easy rasam- Tangy Tomato Soup)


Tomato rasam or thakkali rasam usually tops the list when people think of rasam. Rasam is integral part of south indian meal. When i feel lazy i always make this rasam with some rice. This recipe contains tomato, cumin seeds and black pepper. Rasam can also be had as a soup. It is good when you are suffering from cold or fever or in cold weather. I love rasam a lot and it goes well with steamed rice.


Tomato Rasam


3 tomatoes

1 tsp whole black pepper

1 tsp cumin seeds/jeera

few curry leaves

coriander for garnishing

3 tbsp cooked and mashed toor dal (optional)

salt to taste

pinch of sugar

For seasoning

1 tsp oil or ghee

1 tsp mustard seeds

few curry leaves


Dry grind whole pepper and cumin seeds. This is the rasam powder or you can also use store bought one.

Boil tomatoes in water for 5 mins. Remove and keep them aside covered for few mins.

Remove the skins of tomatoes and mash them.

Take the mashed tomatoes in a pan. Add rasam powder, salt, curry leaves. Let it boil for 5 mins.

Now add 2 cups of water. Add cooked dal and pinch of sugar.

Let it cook until you see some froth on the top and its done.


Heat oil in a pan,add mustard seeds when it splutters add curry leaves. Pour this over rasam and garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve hot with rice or drink as a soup.
