Bhindi/Okra/Ladies Finger Tamarind curry (Vendaikai Puli)

Okra tamarind curry is a south indian dish which is very easy to prepare and tastes delicious. In this okra is cooked in coconut based tamarind gravy. When i first heard about this dish i was in big doubt whether to prepare it or not as i have never eaten a okra in a gravy dish except for sambar. But when i made and tasted it. This curry was awesome. You can have this with rice or chapati.

Okra tamarind curry


300 gms Okra /Bhindi, chopped

1 tbsp coriander powder

1 tsp cumin powder

1 tsp turmeric

2 tbsp tamarind paste

salt to taste

To be made into paste

1/2 cup coconut

3 dry red chilli

For seasoning

1 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

few curry leaves

1 tsp urad dal


Grind together coconut and red chilli to a smooth paste. Set aside.

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves. Let them sizzle for a min.

Now add in okra and saute for 5 mins to get rid of sliminess.

Add coriander, turmeric, cumin powder, salt and mix well.

Add some water and cover with a lid. Let it cook for 10 mins till the okra is cooked.

Now add in the coconut masala with some water. Mix them.

Add the tamarind paste and mix.

Let this simmer for 5 to 10 mins.

Serve with chapati or rice.
